Gigabit Radio Broadband Report

The report ‘Gigabit radio: Unlocking new opportunities with state of the art fixed and portable wireless access technology’ has been released by Wireless Coverage Ltd.

Commissioned to provide an independent overview of the developments and the current state of the UK fixed wireless access (FWA) market, the report reinforces the fact that fixed wireless is, now more so than ever, a commercially viable technology.

Report Overview

  • Driving factors for an attractive business case include the increasing availability of spectrum, including at higher frequency bands, together with cost reductions due to economy of scale and technology improvements
  • Capital cost per connected premises with gigabit-capable fixed wireless access technology can be as low as £350 at the network access level
  • The multiple use cases for fixed wireless include rural areas, semi-mobile and nomadic connectivity, and non-rural smart city areas

It is however unrealistic and unfeasible to position fixed wireless as a panacea for all connectivity challenges: rather, it is one option in the portfolio of access technologies available to altnets and other service providers. Amongst other scenarios, fixed wireless has a key role to play as strong complement to fibre, the last mile for rural applications, and an easily and rapidly deployable solution in city hotspot areas for public WiFi services.

The Wireless Coverage Gigabit radio report, supported by Cambium Networks, Siklu, and UKWISPA, is expected to be of interest throughout the telecoms and broadband industry, in the UK and beyond. With its objective and balanced assessment, the content of the report informs investors, operators, equipment vendors, policy makers and regulators.

The 52-page report contains information about the background to FWA and how the market has evolved, together with analyses of deployment models and the investment angle, concluding with a look ahead to how fixed wireless access technologies and solutions will continue to develop.
